When is my turn to learn?

By Libby Foster | Director

Dear Friends,

Plans changed in Zimbabwe! Schools should have opened at the end of July but that same week saw a surge of local Covid 19 cases in the country. We closed our activities with the children and went back to home school activities. Your donations are helping children with home activties - bags full of learning games and books. Some mothers have shared what their children can do with short videos.

Pretty’s Mum visited me today. Pretty is a young girl in her last year at school, she lives in a rural area near Mutare but is the only deaf person in the village. Her mother has a small plot where she grows vegetables and Pretty helps, but right now Pretty is very lonely. All over the world, people experience depression because of lockdowns, loss of jobs and stress about the future. What is this time like for deaf children and youth? Pretty is often in tears because she is so lonely – she cannot communicate with anyone at home or in the village and longs to meet with her deaf friends. We want to make sure children like Pretty get back to school as soon as they open.

We are in touch with the schools and we are preparing for the return to school – making visors and masks for children and teachers, and ensuring fees and stationery will be ready.

Thank you all for the support you gave for our project. We will continue to bring you updates.
