AEP Launches Reproductive Health Access Initiative

By Pamela O'Brien | Development Director

It is a fact that adolescent girls and young women in Zambia who seek reproductive and menstrual health services in school, or the local free health clinics operated by the Ministry of Health, are stigmatized or bullied, especially by boys and male teachers, but even by local healthcare workers. Nurses turn girls away due to their own religious and social beliefs. The most recent statistics from the 2018 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey shows that since 1992 the percent of young mothers ages 15 to 19 years old has only decreased to 29% from 34%.

Thanks to a generous grant by Hologic, the African Education Program (AEP) will launch the Reproductive Health Access Initiative (RHAI) in 2022, a program for 1500+ adolescent girls and young women ages 14-25 that will provide a safe and friendly environment where they can access consultation and distribution of contraceptives and receive reusable menstrual pads and menstrual cups. RHAI will feature weekly programs to educate participant about reproductive and menstrual health and rights, risks associated with early pregnancy and deepen their understanding of the transmission of HIV/STD and the impacts these infections have on girls and their communities.

The goal will be to increase the accessibility of reproductive and menstrual health products while reducing the pregnancy rate in our community. RHAI will also prepare girls to become community leaders and active agents of change. Through a partnership with the Gold Youth Development Agency, this program empowers participants to become peer educators and effective local advocates for reproductive health access and rights. AEP's youth will be trained as peer educators and community workers who, in turn, will educate their fellow youth in the local community schools on important topics such as HIV/STD awareness, reproductive and menstrual health.

We could not be more grateful for your support and the support of Hologic as we work together to empower more girls and young women in Zambia.
