A new wild food nursery was established in the foothills of the Palani Hills, in the premises of the PHCC centre at Genguvarpatti. This was done with a workshop last December 27, 2023, inviting about 30 adivasi women from the nearby settlements. The workshop also included a various other aspects touching upon NTFP based livelihoods (honey, plant nurseries, native NTFP species and their sustainable harvest).
Ms. Selviswari, from the PHCC centre, has established a medicinal plant nursery and explained the properties of the various plants to the audience. Other resource persons who spoke were Vairen (about bee-keeping and bees in the wild) and Arvind (about the qualities of wild food) and Jeyaram (about nursery management). For the commencement of the wild food nursery Mariammal had brought several species of yams (Dioscorea sp.) and other plants from the Kudhraiyar forests to be grown in the new area.
It is expected that this new space with wild food plants will develop over the coming years and be a learning centre. As it is adjacent to the main native plant nursery of the PHCC – which has regular visitors – it will also be frequented by people from nearby villages and people traveling to Kodaikanal.
