Since the Taliban takeover, MADRE has accelerated funding to local women's organizations and activists in Afghanistan to provide grants that resource the work of women leaders to sustain their communities and build peace. With your generous donation through GlobalGiving, MADRE is proud to report that we’ve already disbursed over $500,000 through our Afghan Women and Girl’s Survival Fund in support of Afghan women and girl activists, human rights defenders and their families experiencing conflict, economic disparity and drought, reaching nearly 6,500 Afghans at-risk—both in-country and as refugees.
For example, to alleviate the dire humanitarian crisis in rural areas and in the capital city of Kabul, MADRE resourced local women activists and networks to provide over 2,000 women and their family members with access to life-saving aid like fuel, medical care, clothing, food, and water. MADRE has funded similar relief efforts for over 3,000 Afghan women, girl and transgender refugees across the border in Pakistan.
MADRE’s Afghan Women and Girl’s Survival Fund has further supported recent relocation, shelter and safe passage efforts that prioritize support to at-risk groups such as LGBTIQ people and those from ethnic minorities. Over the past four months, we’ve been able to ensure the safety of over 1,000 women and girl human rights defenders/activists and their families–both inside and outside of Afghanistan–through resourcing visas and asylum, legal aid, emergency transport as well as funding families willing to house activists at great personal risk.We have further resourced the living expenses for over 600 displaced women human rights defenders in Afghanistan, who are also teachers, midwives and primary breadwinners, so that they can continue their activism and enhance their economic activities.
Thank you for standing with MADRE and our Afghan partners– we could not do this life-saving work without you!
