By Staff | Wayuu Taya Foundation
More than two years after the COVID-19 pandemic and at a time when public health measures have been relaxed in many parts of the region at the Wayuu Taya Foundation, we continue to work tirelessly to improve the situation of the communities of La Guajira subregion through the strengthening of health and hygiene initiatives, food and nutrition programs, and drinking water for children and their families to help mitigate vulnerability that may arise from the appearance of any other virus or epidemic.
Monthly we have favored more children, families, and communities thanks to the implementation of permanent aid programs for the vulnerable population, which we carry out with the support of donors, allies, and volunteers.
Free drinking water is vital for disease prevention. Water's low availability and quality affects 95% of the Wayuu population.
Therefore, We continue to bring free water to schools, health centers, nursing homes, and institutions in remote areas. We have benefited more than 26,000 people thanks to the operation of two tanker trucks, which have provided 478,000 liters of drinking water, contributing to hygiene and sanitation in the benefited institutions. In the next months, we will incorporate a new tanker truck to support more institutions, such as schools and health centers in the Mara and Maracaibo municipalities.
We invite you to join our purpose of providing Help for the Covid-19 pandemic to the depressed indigenous communities living in Venezuela near the border with Colombia to eradicate the factors that favor the spread of viruses or epidemics, malnutrition, and extreme poverty.
Humanitarian Aid: Food, Medicines, and Supplies
We have learned that in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, protecting children and adolescents with a healthy diet is essential, keeping them healthy and active and with a strong immune system.
For this reason, we continue with the weekly distribution of vegetables and fruits, delivering more than 94,166 kg of food and serving 63,106 plates weekly in 56 schools in La Guajira in the north of Zulia state. We also supplied around 7,000 units of canned fish for community kitchens, nursing homes, nutritional recovery centers, health centers, and vulnerable communities, helping more than 14,500 people.
We continue to support sick people with limited resources by providing individual medical treatments and providing 283 people with medicines prescribed by specialists. Additionally, we collaborate with foundations and health centers to deliver 2,740 medicines and supplies.
Agroecological Farming: Inclusive and sustainable
The Agriculture Plan advances according to the schedule established for this year. We are growing organic products such as chili peppers, lentils, corn, cassava, pumpkin, black bean, guajiro, and sweet chili. We have harvested 15,500 kilograms of organically harvested products, of which more than 30% are donated to the most needy communities in the Mara and Guajira municipalities.
We continue to incorporate 51% of the female population of the region in agroecological crops, thus boosting the local economy and productive employment of women in the area.
Musical education: Orchestra and Intercultural Choir
We preserve tradition and cultural heritage with Wayuu ancestral music classes for almost 800 children at the Tepichi Talashi and Jesús Redentor schools. We continued with the presentations of the Wayuu Taya Nucleus, holding a concert to welcome Easter, accompanied by a sacred and traditional repertoire performed by 210 members. We also incorporated other musical initiation Programs, such as Sweet Flute and Alma Llanera, where 55 and 172 children, respectively, participate.
Our commitment is to continue providing transportation and snacks to almost Three hundred children from 17 communities for the achievement of academic objectives.
Thanks to the support of donors like you, in recent months, 26,000 people had access to free drinking water, we have distributed 95 tons of food, we have provided 2,740 medicines and supplies for free to people and institutions in need, we have encouraged more than 300 children with music, and we are developing sustainable and inclusive agroecological programs, and this is only possible thanks to your generous contributions.
