WE MEET OUR GOAL

By Ben Blevins | Director

We are very excited to have reached the fundraising goal for this project. This Spring, members of the White Mountain Apache tribe will be traveling to Guatemala for training on Adobe building materials. They will also be participating in workshops with an Adobe training nonprofit in New Mexico.

An exciting addition to the building program is a new partnership with the mentoring and after-school program coordinated through A Different Approach consulting. The afterschool program is a tribally initiated activity to assist students find a good life in the tribal community. The majority of tribal youth are attending public schools in the State of Arizona. The state concentrates the majority of funding for tribal youth in behavioral health programming.  School staff and administration tend to focus on managing student behavior, and the curriculum is oriented towards assisting students attend University.

While not intending to devalue a University Education, in the context of the community there are many life and vocational skills that are critical and not being addressed in the current context. A response to this problem is A Different Approach's creation of a program to engage in tribal youth with vocational and life skills development.

A Different Approach curriculum will now incorporate a project to test the viability of a student-run adobe block enterprise.   This will include learning the techniques of production and the business acumen in small enterprise development.

We will be closing down this funding page.  We will continue updating on the Global Giving site through project #37283 - A Different Approach to Tribal Youth Education.

Thank you very much for supporting the building of a just and sustainable future.
