“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”- Proverb
Vanaja Ramesan, a 52-year old widow, residing at Thiruvanchoor (N 9.6134985 and E 76.5715896), Kottayam district, Kerala, India, with her two daughters, had met her livelihood needs with the meager income from a small petty shop at Naalumanikkattu, a local village tourism destination, until a few months ago. About six months back, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she and the two young girls (17 and 19 years old) were thrown into dismay. She couldn’t find money for treatment and meet daily needs. Due to the financial crisis, her daughters discontinued their studies. She has been surviving mainly with the help of philanthropists.
TIES donated ten honey boxes to her as part of the Bees for Life project and placed them at her home premises. TIES beekeepers will provide training to her daughters for the next one year, until they will be equipped with apiculture practices.
The honey that would be collected in the current season would provide revenue for the family at the beginning of the project itself.
‘Bees for Life’ project's project leaders have identified ten more underprivileged and distressed families for similar kinds of support. A unit of ten honey boxes with accessories costs approximately $ 675. Thank you for your generous support to this project.
