Comfort Cases Report to GlobalGiving
January 1, 2024 – August 30, 2024
Focus on Blankets and Books: The Power of Comfort and Connection
Introduction
From January 1, 2024, to August 30, 2024, Comfort Cases distributed over 20,421 cases to children entering foster care across the U.S. Within each case, two key items stand out for their ability to provide immediate comfort: a warm, soft blanket and an age-appropriate book. These seemingly simple items play a profound role in supporting children during one of the most traumatic transitions of their young lives. Thanks to the support of GlobalGiving and our donors, Comfort Cases ensured that every child who received a case also received these items, which foster a sense of safety, belonging, and emotional support.
The Importance of Blankets
A blanket is not just a physical covering; it represents security, warmth, and a sense of ownership—things that many children in foster care desperately need when they leave their homes, often with little to nothing in hand. The blankets we include in each Comfort Case have become cherished items for these children. Many have reported clinging to their blanket as a source of solace during the first nights in a new, unfamiliar environment.

The Role of Books
Books are not merely educational tools in a Comfort Case—they are instruments of escape, imagination, and self-expression. For children in foster care, books open up entire worlds beyond their current circumstances. They offer a momentary escape and a chance to imagine a brighter future, which can be incredibly healing in times of distress.

Impact Stories:
Why These Items Are So Important
The inclusion of blankets and books in Comfort Cases cannot be underestimated. These items go beyond their material form to offer emotional support, a sense of normalcy, and opportunities for connection. In the absence of familiar environments or belongings, a blanket provides physical warmth and emotional reassurance, while a book offers mental refuge and stimulation. Together, they help children begin to cope with their new reality in a more manageable and comforting way.
Challenges and Opportunities
While Comfort Cases has successfully provided blankets and books to tens of thousands of children, there are always challenges in scaling these efforts. Blankets, being bulky, require significant storage and shipping space, while the selection of books needs careful attention to ensure they are appropriate for different age groups, literacy levels, and cultural backgrounds. Going forward, Comfort Cases will continue to refine its selection of books and explore eco-friendly, lightweight blanket options to meet the increasing demand.
Looking Ahead
Our goal for the remainder of 2024 is to distribute an additional 25,000 Comfort Cases, each with a blanket and book. As part of this effort, we are working with publishing partners to expand our book offerings, particularly for older youth, and exploring partnerships with sustainable textile companies to provide high-quality, durable blankets.
Conclusion
Blankets and books are essential components of every Comfort Case, and their impact on children in foster care is undeniable. With the help of GlobalGiving and other partners, we can continue to ensure that no child in foster care is left without these powerful tools of comfort and connection. We are deeply grateful for your support, which allows us to offer not only physical items but also the emotional and psychological support these children so desperately need.
