Report 3-Help toimprove vocabulary skills of blind

By Sathiya B | Project Leader

Visually Impaired students learning computer usage
Visually Impaired students learning computer usage

Summary: Main objective of the project is to provide braille laptop to students with any kind of visual disability (from low vision and complete blindness to people at risk of losing vision with time) from economically backward and marginalized communities to promote reading and literacy.

Dotbook will help Visually Impaired students to be on par with other kids and plays a vital role in inclusive education. With GlobalGiving project we are planning to procure the Dotbook laptop and distribute to students from marginalized community. We are yet to receive required funds to procure Dotbook braille refreshable device as per plan.

Self-reading helps Visually Impaired people to improve their vocabulary and develop communication skills. Most of the Visually Impaired people lack in spellings and we are sure that the device can help to learn and to be in par with other sighted students.

Roshni, 29yrs old, from Mangalore is completely blind by birth. Her father is a farmer and mother is a homemaker. She has 2 elder sisters who are married.

Roshni was introduced to Braille in school and is very comfortable with it. She also learnt basic computer in school. When a friend told her about Mitra Jyothi, Roshni jumped at the opportunity to learn something new and joined the 3 months Computer course at Mitra Jyothi.

Here at Mitra Jyothi Roshni got introduced to various accessible equipments and devices available for Visually Impaired people. She says if I got the opportunity to get to know about these in her early life it might have helped in her education. She was so impressed especially with the braille refreshable devices. She doesn’t miss an opportunity to read a good book when she comes across one.

Still she feels it is not too late, it can help her in higher education to gain more knowledge and to aspire her dreams. Many like Roshni are looking to grab opportunities and come up in life. We are sure that with GlobalGiving project support we can create difference in their lives.
