At Healing Together Nepal, we are on a mission to break generational cycles of trauma and violence.
Last month, we deepened this work by not only equipping LGBTIQ community members with tools to heal themselves and their peers, but we also piloted a new approach: including family members in our training. Through a partnership with community organization, Samarpan Sabhya Samaj Nepal, our trainers Suresh and Sarita trained LGBTIQ members, together with their partners, parents, guardians, and family members.
The result was a deeply moving and emotional experience for everyone, as survivors of trauma shared their stories, cultivated compassion and empathy for the pain that their loved ones have experienced, and gained practical tools for Emotional First Aid and peer counseling.
One of the family members shared: "I got new ideas and knowledge to healing oneself and we should not judge people without knowing them."
Another shared: "What I found most effective in this workshop was listening to the traumatized person, trying to understand, and giving them encouragement. We can help just by listening."
Given the success of this family / community model, our team will be training teachers, parents and caregivers, and students starting this fall, thanks to a 3-year commitment by two different municipalities to not only train the entire community, but also work together to implement trauma-informed policies and programs to make schools “child safe" and prevent and disrupt violence, abuse, and harm.
We are so proud of Suresh and Sarita for their fierce commitment to ending cycles of violence.
And we are grateful to you, our supporters, for the ripple effect you are creating for future generations.
