Kulika Uganda Project Progress Report
January 7th 2022
This report covers the period September – December 2021. It’s the fourth report since obtaining funds in October 2020.
Participants/Training
During this period, Kulika Uganda trained 221 participants (203 females, 18 male) on briquette making and use. The emphasis was on using maize cobs and residues of soybean husks and sticks as carbonized material hence maximizing the use of residues from their farm by-products. The participants came from 11 farmer groups situated in three sub-counties in Wakiso District. They are organized farmers specializing in growing maize and soybean. In addition, the participants were trained in entrepreneurship with focus on earning revenue from the enterprise.
Production of the briquettes
Carbonization materials
During this period, we generated 3,780 Kgs of carbonization materials which included cassava flour as a binder, maize cobs and soy bean husks.
Briquettes production
During the period, the briquette unit produced 4,010 Kgs of stick briquettes. With the 6,000 target, we were 1,990 kgs below which is 33.1% shortfall compared to 29.58% shortfall during the May – August production. To date, the unit has cumulatively produced 11,223kgs of briquettes. The plan for the women to engage in producing, using and selling of briquettes was again challenged by COVID-19 lockdown and fatal second wave that the country experienced. At least 7 women undertook cooking experiments using the briquettes made by their groups. This activity will be further pursued in the next quarter.
Promotion of Briquette Usage.
At the community level, Participants are encouraged to make own briquettes and use, To date, at least 7 women have used the briquettes to prepare beans which is the biggest fuel consumer and yet widely eaten by most families. The women said that use of briquettes was effective and cost saving compared to charcoal. The project will build on that premise to further sensitize and encourage the use of briquettes.
A simple video was developed on how to use briquettes. The video will be used during trainings for publicity and awareness. This will be achieved by the end of the first quarter 2022.
Way forward
Training program: We will continue conducting training for the girls and women within the communities surrounding the Kulika Training Centre as well as one group of women living in the north eastern part of the country and are in dire need of alternative energy for food preparation.
Promotion of briquette usage: The simple video which was produced during the quarter will be used for training on how to appropriately light the briquettes. More demonstrations are being conducted and the outputs will be reported in the next quarter.
Support for manual briquette machines
With the support given, 6 manual briquette making machines for the 203 participants are being made. The learners are being organized in groups of 30-40 members per group. Each group will receive a manual machine for briquette making.
Continued support for the project: Kulika continues to request for grants/donations to realize the project budget and support practical learning by offering start up kits to the participants. We thank all the generous donors who have supported the project to date.
