Kulika Uganda Project Progress Report

May 3rd 2023

This report covers the period January – April 2023. It’s the eighth report since obtaining funds in October 2020.

Adaptation of knowledge and skills learnt

For brooding of chicks: At least 6 women continuously make and use briquettes for brooding day-old broiler chicks. They find briquettes cheaper than any other source of energy for providing warmth during brooding processes for chicks.  These ladies make 6 cycles of rearing broilers in 12 months. Each woman uses at least 100 Kgs of briquettes per cycle translating into 3,600kgs in 12 months. Briquettes are a preferred source by many poultry farmers.

Source of Revenue: At least 27 women are making and selling briquettes to supplement their domestic incomes of which 90% are from eastern Uganda and 10% from central Uganda.

Making and Marketing of Briquettes at the Kulika Training Centre

At the training centre, making and selling of briquettes continues. During the period, a total of 4,253 kgs were made and sold during the quarter. The clients increased by 10 compared to the same quarter last year. Revenue from the project is used to supplement the facilitation of trainers, repairing of the machines and improvement of the facility for training other women.

Training

Training Intern students: During this quarter Kulika Training centre continued with training activities in briquette making and use. A total of 31 student Youths (19 Male and 15 Female) from three institutions of higher learning in Uganda were trained on briquette making and use. At least 3 students picked interest in continuing briquette making as a business in future.

Extension Work Among Community: In eastern Uganda, at least 16 women have acquired knowledge on briquette making and use following trainings conducted by fellow women that received training from Kulika Uganda. Those trained are largely using briquettes for domestic cooking.

Way forward

Training more women: During the next period, we will continue training at least 50 women on making and using briquettes as well as making of simple Lorena cook stoves that utilize briquettes

Improvement of the drying facility: The drying facility at the Kulika Training Centre will be repaired to enable increase the amount dried and sold for the benefit of the entire project.

Appreciation and request: Kulika Uganda is highly grateful for the kind donations received from GlobalGiving. The funds support training of communities on fuel saving technology through briquette making and use.
