Kulika Uganda Project Progress Report

The report covers the period June – September 2024. It’s the twelfth report since obtaining funds in October 2020.
Learners and users of briquettes continue appreciating the cost reduction of fuel for cooking, health and safety during cooking as briquettes reduce smoke emissions by over 85% compared to firewood. They also realized economic savings by at least 30 % on average; comparing usage of briquettes against other alternatives e.g. firewood, charcoal, electricity, and gas.
Progress towards adaptation
Briquette Training: During the quarter, the project continued with training activities and making of briquettes for safe, cheaper, and clean energy as well as for income generation. hence contributing to environmental protection.
Intern Students: A total of 28 students Youth, (17 male and 11 female) from higher institutions of learning received trainings on making, using selling of briquettes.
Domestic cooking:During the quarter Kulika Training Centre registered at least 6 new clients (1 woman and 5 men) who appreciated and started using briquettes for domestic cooking. Thus, cumulatively the number of household clients using briquettes for domestic cooking grew from 219 to 225 users. During the same period, Kulika registered 1 new institutional client in addition to the existing four other clients. These have continued to buy and use briquettes for food preparation.
Brooding Chicks: A total of 9 farms used briquettes for brooding day-old chicks compared to 7 in the last reporting period.
Making and Selling of Briquettes at Kulika Training Centre: During this period, a total of 5,100.5 kg generated Ugx 5,100,500 compared to 4,700kgs kgs of last quarter that generated Ugx 4,470,000 indicating 8% increase.
Extension Work among the Community: During the period, the Centre trained a group of three women on how to make briquettes without using machines. They mix aunt hill soil, clay and carbonised biomass and make balls out of the mixture which they dry and later use for cooking.
The unit was used for practical learning by 13 schools (7 for primary and 6 for secondary) on how to make and use briquettes. At least 26 teachers benefited from the training alongside the learners.
