Rain is a common occurrence in the Caribbean, but for those without a secure roof, it results in moldy and unsafe living conditions. 8 months after Hurricane Fiona, PRoTechos received a referral from the Municipality of San German and the nonprofit organization “Puerto Rico I Love You” asking us to help Alfredo, a 77 year-old man living alone in a home that suffered severe damage during that hurricane.
After assessing Alfredo’s roof, PRoTechos created a reconstruction plan along with an estimate for materials. As a training exercise, we shared the design with our trainees and had them provide construction estimates. It was a pivotal moment in their learning experience as they not only learned to develop a complete reconstruction plan but also saw first-hand that a nonprofit, relying exclusively on grants and donations, was able to deliver support to one of the island’s most vulnerable residents.
Thanks to your donations through GlobalGiving and the support of the Municipality of San German and PR I Love You, PRoTechos was able to purchase the hurricane ties, expansion screws and other materials needed to build a secure roof for Alfredo, and together with our crew of carpentry trainers and apprentices, that is exactly what we did.
Two weeks later, we are narrating a successful case driven by the collective efforts of several actors, including donors across different platforms. Carpentry trainers, trainees and donors came together to provide a secure roof and safe living environment to an elderly person.
We are grateful for your support without which we could not continue to build capacity by providing carpentry training while building strong roofs for those most at risk who cannot help themselves.
