We continue to thank our donors for their contribution to our campaign to build a dorm for 100 street youth. We started to build a dorm to house 50 girls and 50 boys from the streets and house them at Tumaini Innovation Center where they will go through rehabilitation, basic accelerated education, engineering, and vocational training, and permanent reintegration back to their communities. At Tumaini we have demonstrated the success of rehabilitating, educating, and reintegrating street youth for the past four years. Since the last report, our students have increased from 29 to 35. With the efforts through GlobalGiving, we are confident to scale the organization's successful efforts to more boys and girls in the streets of Eldoret.
We have raised over 12,000 USD out of the total 75000 USD and have decided to start the building process despite the amount raised. We have hired a contractor and this week we did measure the dimensions of where the building will be built. This will be followed by excavation and laying of the foundation slab. See pictures of the students and the contractor doing the measurements.
Student report: Alex
- Alex studies electrical wiring at the Tumaini Vocational Center. He rides a bicycle from Kanetik a village located 9 kilometers away. “My hope is the dorm is completed soon so that I can sleep at the center and save a lot of the time to practice my wiring skills,” he says. Recently during the weekly student meeting, the students asked about the progress of the dorm. The day scholars are eager to have the dorm completed so that they can board and have ample time to study.

We greatly appreciate all our donors for their contribution to our campaign to build a dorm for 100 street youth. We are honored to share this journey of rescuing 50 girls and 50 boys from the streets and house them at Tumaini Innovation Center where they will go through rehabilitation, basic accelerated education, engineering and vocational training, and permanent reintegration back to their communities. At Tumaini we have demonstrated the success of rehabilitating, educating, and reintegrating street youth for the past four years. From the start of 2019, we have expanded the school from 17 to 29 students with five girls joining as day scholars. With the efforts through GlobalGiving, we are confident to scale the organization's successful efforts to more boys and girls in the streets of Eldoret.
- We have raised 12,174 USD out of the total 75000 USD and are currently in the process of planning and procuring the materials to start off the foundation of the building.
- We have prepared the blueprint for the building and began to develop a 3D model of the same (attached as photos with the report).
- As per the model, the dorm will host 100-bed bunkers for both boys and girls. Girls will be accommodated one building and the boys on the other. There will be bathrooms and laundry spaces in both the buildings (The 3D model shows only one building, however, the same design will be used for both boys and girls building). There is space for the matron and patron who will take care of the students during the night.
Student report: Marion
- Marion studies hairdressing at our vocational center is one of the 5 girls come from a slum called Kamukunji 8 kilometer away and they have to walk to and fro every day - a total of 16 kilometers!
- “I am so excited that Tumaini is planning on building a dorm,” she says “The other girls and I who walk for a long distance to Tumaini will be saved from all that long and tiring walk from home to school. I can't wait for it to be complete and appreciate all those that are supporting us to build it.”
