We are finally ready to ramp up construction of habitats to fill the Refuge with animals who desperately need a safe home. As of now, only about 1,500 of the nearly 10,000 acres are fully developed.
Completion of this project will mean dramatically increasing our capacity to rescue animals and place them in environments they will thrive in. As simple as it sounds on paper, this exhaustive process requires much more than a fence. After careful planning of how to maximize the terrain within each prospective habitat, the construction can begin on their underground dens. Once you consider the complexity of navigating heavy machinery through a variety of valleys, ravines, and steep inclines you can begin to understand the immense challenges ahead of us.
Adding habitats means we’ll be able to consider more frequent rescue operations, but we can only take on new rescues when we’re confident that we can provide a range of habitat options for each animal. This includes those that prefer a smaller grouping or even a solitary habitat. This is one of our main challenges: we need to have several habitats available ahead of any new rescue to ensure we have the flexibility to meet the needs of each animal.
Meeting these needs is vital for providing the highest quality of life. With every finished acre we are one step closer to realizing the full potential of the Refuge. We urge you to join the thousands of other people who have contributed to our Habitat Construction Fund and become an official Habitat Creator.
