WHO WE ARE
CSC is a healthcare organization that provides affordable surgical care by skilled specialists. CSC started as a small project to help victims of landmine injuries, many of whom were children. Since then, it has grown into what it is today - a tertiary teaching hospital with over 75 Cambodian staff, and almost 100,000 surgeries since 1998. We offer free or low-cost surgical care and rehabilitation in numerous specialties for economically disadvantaged patients. We also focus on building capacity by providing sub-specialty surgical training and international training to medical professionals. Integral to our mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable rehabilitative surgical services.
We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives.
THE ASK
Whatever you can give, please know we are grateful to receive it! Little acts of kindness can collectively make a big difference. Thank you for your continued support and for helping us live our mission.
Triumph Over Tragedy: The Journey
of a Brave Cambodian Boy
Sok Heng,13, lives in Takeo province with his parents, while his older siblings live with a relative and attend high school in the capital city, Phnom Penh. His parents make and sell ice cream outside of their home. Sok Heng's favorite subject is Khmer history. When he grows up, he wants to be an ice cream maker like his parents. When Sok Heng was just 5 years old, he injured his right hand and arm by placing his hand into a running ice machine. His mother took him to a hospital, where doctors had to amputate his right arm above the elbow. In the last several months, the stump has become painful and there is overgrowth of the bone in the affected area. He now needs another amputation on his right arm to address the issues with the current amputation site. Sok Heng’s mother learned about CSC from a provincial hospital and sought treatment.
As a young boy, Sok Heng had to come to terms with the loss of his right hand, and he remained cautiously optimistic that he could overcome this challenge, too. On June 17th, surgeons performed a right upper arm amputation to remove the unhealthy tissue and relieve Sok Heng from his pain. He and his mom spent time with the physiotherapy team for muscle strength, and care for his incision, including gentle massage to reduce scar tissue tightness. Thanks to CSC, Sok Heng can eventually learn to adapt, and find new ways to complete school and eventually find a job he loves.
