WHO WE ARE

CSC aims to improve the quality of life for disabled poor people by providing free rehabilitation surgery. Integral to this mission is a program of training local surgeons and health workers, focusing on the development of sustainable surgical services for Cambodians.

Socheat is a 21-year-old blacksmith from Cambodia.  In 2019, he was in a severe motorcycle accident, injuring his left shoulder. He was diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury, which injures the shoulder, arm, and hand, causing a loss of function. Unable to move or feel his left arm, he endured constant pain and was unable to work. In January 2020, Socheat traveled to Children’s Surgical Centre to receive treatment.  Thanks to your generous support, he had several operations and has slowly rehabilitated the use of his arm to be able to return to work.

 CHALLENGES

As the new year began, CSC has the unwanted task and monumental task of finding a new home to continue our mission of rehabilitative surgery for the underprivileged and teaching our Khmer staff to ensure the efforts are sustained. Activity in 2019 was similar to 2018, with just under 4,000 operations and 33,000 consultations.

Then the COVID 19 pandemic hit Cambodia, and CSC was forced to curtail operations, furlough staff, and re-think how to manage in a world with COVID 19. Donations have fallen about 30% with many large donors ceasing support.

CSC celebrates World Hearing Day March 3, 2020

Over 5% of the world's population suffers from disabling hearing loss. In Cambodia, 1 out of every 20 people experiences hearing loss.  At CSC, we help Cambodians regain their hearing and prevent further worsening of life-threatening neglected ear conditions.

With the support of the World Health Organization, CSC’s ENT team was able to reach dozens of families and hundreds of individuals in Phnom Penh, including children and elderly, and provide them with a free hearing test and inform them of ways to protect their hearing and access ear care.
