WHO WE ARE CSC aims to improve the quality of life for disabled poor people by providing free rehabilitation surgery. Integral to CSC’s mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on thedevelopment of sustainable surgical services.
Meet Hul Hul is a 21-year-old mechanic from Kampong Cham Province. He has three siblings, and his parents are farmers. He was in an accident in April with trauma to his left shoulder. He was taken to a private clinic for traditional Khmer treatment, but he has no movement in his left shoulder all the way to his hand. His family traveled 3 hours to Children’s Surgical Centre earlier this summer to see if we could help him. In July, surgeons performed a complex brachial plexus nerve transfer surgery to repair the damaged nerves.
As he recovers, he will start working with the physiotherapy team to stretch and strengthen the muscles in his left shoulder and arm. Although the recovery may take up to a year for the damaged nerves to regenerate, he will be able to use his left arm again and return to work as a mechanic.
Hul said: “I am so thankful I was able to receive this procedure to improve my life. I want the ability to take care of myself and to work to help my family. Thank you to the strangers who supported me to have this surgery.”
CHALLENGES The COVID-19 pandemic hit Cambodia in early 2021; CSC activity continues to be very low because patients are afraid or cannot travel to Phnom Penh, which has been under lockdown much of the year as we try to contain the pandemic and the new Delta variant. Donations have fallen dramatically with many large donors ceasing support. As we continue our mission of training local surgeons and improving the quality of life for disabled Cambodians, every donation helps to pay for staff and supplies.
Our mission is to directly connect people through technology to access life-changing surgery. We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives. CSC aims to improve the quality of life for disabled poor people by providing rehabilitation surgery.
