Children's Surgical Centre Qu Report April 2023

WHO WE ARE

CSC provides affordable surgical care by skilled specialists, offers it free to those who need it most, builds capacity by the provision of sub-specialty surgical & international training, and fills gaps in currently available healthcare.

Integral to CSC’s mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable surgical services.

Removing Social Stigma Through Rehabilitative Surgery

SN is 17 years old and lives with her parents and her four-year-old sister. Her parents are rice farmers in Kampong Speu province.  She studies in grade 9 and enjoys math and physics. At home, she likes to watch videos on the phone. When she is older, she would like to be a math teacher.
SN's parents noticed stiffness on the left side of her neck when she was a toddler. A local clinic diagnosed her with torticollis, a twisting of the neck that causes the head to rotate and tilt at an odd angle. This likely occurred from her position in the womb, resulting in injury to her neck muscles. The family did not have money to fix her neck, hoping she would grow out of it.
SN has limited motion of her neck and has difficulty performing many daily tasks. One shoulder is higher than the other. Her body image leaves her shy and socially embarrassed.
Fortunately, a relative told her about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, where she and her family traveled two hours for treatment. Doctors performed a tenotomy (cutting or removal of tendons) of her sternocleidomastoid muscle to restore her range of neck motion. The surgery will resolve her head tilt and disfigurement, improving her self-image and quality of life.

We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives.
