WHO WE ARE

CSC provides affordable surgical care by skilled specialists, offers it free to those who need it most, builds capacity by the provision of sub-specialty surgical & international training, and fills gaps in current available healthcare.

Integral to CSC’s mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable surgical services.

Early intervention to avoid devastating effect of a birth injury

SreyTey is a playful 3-year-old from Cambodia. She lives in Svay Reing province with her parents and two older siblings. Her mother cares for the children at home, while her dad earns a living as a taxi driver. She loves ice cream, cartoons, and playing with her siblings.
SreyTey’s mom had a long and difficult delivery with shoulder dystocia - where one or both shoulders get stuck in the birth canal. Since birth, she noticed that SreyTey had limited movement in her left arm. She has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on her left side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this network can result in loss of function and sensation. She was unable to move her left hand and had limited strength and function in the arm. SreyTey traveled to CSC to receive treatment – the only centre in the country where this treatment is available for poor Cambodians. On May 11, she underwent a brachial plexus repair surgery.  Surgeons hope to restore the shoulder movement by transferring working muscles to power her non-working muscles and tendons.

SreyTey will keep her surgical site covered and her arm elevated for several weeks after surgery, then she will begin progressive strength training with the physiotherapy team. Full recovery might take many months, but SreyTey's parents are confident she will be able to improve the use of her left arm and have a normal childhood.

We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives.
