On March 28, a deadly earthquake and strong aftershock occurred near Mandalay, Myanmar, affecting an estimated 6.1 million people. In response, CARE's team in Myanmar has launched a rapid humanitarian assessment and an initial response with immediate cash assistance, water, sanitation, and hygiene services, food and nutrition support, shelter, health, and protection services for women and girls. As of today, we estimate reaching 500,000 people through this initial response.
Casualty numbers from last week's earthquake have risen to over 2,700, with thousands more injured or still missing. The extreme devastation has impacted some 35 million people. Homes, schools and hospitals have collapsed. Roads and bridges are damaged, hindering the delivery of aid. Many areas are completely cut off, with landslide warnings compounding the danger. Thousands of people are living in parks and on the streets, without protection from the elements.
CARE is responding to Myanmar's earthquake with cash assistance, clean water, food, shelter, healthcare, and protection for vulnerable groups. Families receive cash to buy essentials, while hygiene kits and clean water help prevent disease. Food aid focuses on pregnant women and children, and shelter kits provide relief for the displaced. Healthcare support includes first-aid kits and mobile clinics. CARE also protects women and girls with dignity kits and violence prevention efforts.
CARE has built a strong presence in Myanmar over the last three decades by forging trusted relationships with local communities and partners. Despite periods of conflict and political transition, we have successfully delivered humanitarian assistance and development programs. Our in-country partner network enables us to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies such as the recent earthquake and aftershocks.
