Our Cash for Trash and Waste Education Program is over half funded! We've raised $3959 out of a total goal of $6460. Most of this came in during our recent Little x Little campaign, and a big thank you to all those donors who helped us get matching funds.
Bumi Sehat has run the waste program from July 2022 to November 2022, for a total of five months so far. The chance to trade in plastic waste for cash has gotten many local families interested. Between 23 and 64 families participate each month, out of a village of around 100 families. We're pretty happy with these results as it means that nearly half of village families are participating in our program on a regular basis.
So far, the program has collected 2,429 kg of plastic waste. The trash was sold to a recyling company for a total revenue of about USD $140. Roughly 2/3 of this amount was distributed to families in return for their waste and the rest will go into a village savings account for future payments. We anticipate that the waste program will be able to pay for itself soon.
The education program was offered several times in local schools to over 200 students. Each student received a brand new, high-quality reusable water bottle with the Bumi Sehat logo. The kids feel special having something of their own with our logo on it. They are encouraged to keep refilling the bottle with water, instead of buying one-time-use plastic water bottles every time they are thirsty. Having a cool water bottle also encourages the kids to drink more water, so it's a healthy step as well.
