Our Cash for Trash program is 80% funded. We've raised $5361 (out of $6460 needed) and have only $1099 to go until it's fully funded. We're getting close!
So far this year (to October) the program has collected 1,423.4 kg of waste and paid villagers a total of IDR Rupiah 838,300 for plastic waste. Part of the waste is organic matter, which we collect and convert into compost in our Bumi Sehat gardens. The rest will be paper, cardboard or other materials which can also be recycled. This means that our program has prevented over 1,400 kg of waste from going into landfulls!
You may have heard on the news about Bali's landfill fires. Currently, there are ongoing fires at two facilities on our island. These fires are often caused by organic waste decomposing and emitting methane and other gases which can catch fire in hot, tropical conditions. When plastic waste in a landfill burns, toxic fumes are released. We are helping to keep these types of waste out of landfill and stop plastic from being burned.
Our Bumi Sehat outreach team has also delivered training in the local elementary schools and we're including some photos of our team in action. We're teaching young Balinese about the importance of recycling and getitng them started with these habits while they're young. They teach their parents about recycling and encourage the family to collect organic waste to compost.
