We are grateful for the support our campaign to feed up to 500 children received. unfortunately, 2021 began in strict lockdown mode meaning kids could not gather to play games, listen to life-changing stories nor play. as a result, our strategy had to quickly change and create a Covid free environment for the children to come in and grab a meal. no sit-in meals were allowed and no sharing of plates was allowed as well too. children had to bring in a container or plate for their food to be put in and they took that away to eat.
due to the strict nature of the lockdown, we were unable to have long winding lines of kids coming for food until much later. this meant we were restricted to feeding fewer kids than we had wanted.
on the whole from one meal a day in 2020 and feeding fewer children we are now able to feed 4 times a week. many thanks for the support you have given us. we are not there yet as we desire to provide a nutritious meal a day for 500 children. the funds we have raised enable us to provide at most 4 meals a day. during the week we target the hardest-hit kids while on Saturdays we open up the feeding to everyone one of them.
Early March lockdown rules were relaxed this enabled us to feed more children but we are still not able to engage in sporting activities, Nor playing in groups but we have tried to have spaced gatherings and teach the children the dangers of the Coronavirus and continue to remind them of the need to stay safe. we cant wait to start doing sporting activities again!
Your support has made a lot of a difference as the meal variety has improved. we are ensuring there are carbohydrates and protein in each meal to try as much as possible to create a balanced diet.
Schools reopened 15 March for those sitting for public exams and 22 March for everyone else. we are not able to do much in terms of helping some of the children with school fees as the bulk of the raised funds is earmarked for feeding throughout the year. we, therefore, need to have a separate funding process to enable us to contribute significantly towards school fee support. meanwhile, we are working on having tutors around the area to help the children with studying and homework. the current list we can support has 13 primary school kids and 8 secondary school kids. these 21 are the ones we have paid fees for. we have up to 100 other kids waiting for support to enroll.
We are launching what we call Laundry Thursdays. This is a special day to help the kids under our care who have zero access to bath and washing soap to bring their clothes for washing up, brush their teeth (yes, kids here can go for months without a single brushing of teeth- a lot of awareness-raising and provision of toothpaste is needed) and take a bath.
Thank you
