In Colombia many talented children from low-income families have no opportunity to benefit from a good, effective education. Eight-year-old Guadelupe is such a child. She shares a meager room and a bed with her sick grandmother. Despite the fact that she has great enthusiasm for learning, at school she only wastes it. In public schools drug gangs prowl the school grounds. Kidnappings, especially of girls, are not uncommon. We are saving them by supporting good education and develop their skills.
Many gifted children from low-income families in Medellin in Colombia waste their time at school as the public schools are at very low level of education and endangered with drug abuse. They have no chance to gain good level of knowledge and develop skills even if they are intelligent and eager to learn. And yet education is a key element in the fight against poverty. Our financial support through scholarships can help them to access to quality education that makes a difference in their future.
We want to establish and support a Scholarship Fund that will be implemented in several stages: identification and selection of candidates: identification of children showing special talents in various fields, who come from low-income families and belong to our neighborhoods, such as parishes, institutions, awarding of scholarships: after the selection of candidates, the fund will cover the full or partial cost of education at private schools selected on the basis of recommendations.
The fund's grantees will have the chance to get an education that will open the door to a better future, safe and free from drugs. Through educational support the young people will become leaders in their communities and examples to others of how to overcome difficulties and strive for a better life in healthy families. This addresses the need for financial stability and better organization of efforts which will help make the fund sustainable and effective in the long term.
