Low bandwith- OSCAR Foundation Report

By Elsa Varghese | Project Leader

Hello Team,
Please see below the report for the following project Cityzens Giving For Recovery - Mumbai (47728)

Mumbai and all of India has been under lockdown since 24th March 2020 as the government's directive to prevent the rise of COVID -19 cases. As transport, markets, offices closed down and strict social distancing rules were imposed, many of our children's families were drastically affected as their parents are daily wage workers (fishermen, vegetable vendors, rickshaw drivers) who live hand to mouth. Their sources of daily income were abruptly cut off. Children are confined in their extremely small homes that get increasingly hot and suffocated with the onset of summer amid a dreary atmosphere of depravity and depressing Covid news everyday.

With the schools not reopening yet and most of the curriculum being online even as the new academic term is set to begin, the learning gap seems to be increasing. Experts suggest that only 8% of homes with young members have computers with net links. Among the poorest 20% of households, only 2.7% have access to a computer and 8.9% to internet facilities. As learning suffers, these challenges are will increase the dropout rates in schools across India.

To help combat this situation, OSCAR Foundation set up digital learning centres across the poorest slums in Mumbai. These centres provide children with age-appropriate computer courses additionally provides them with free time to access the computer and internet for their school learning. Till date, we have 3 centres in operation and 2 more will be opened up in the coming months. Each centre has a facilitator who will reach out to more than 100 children.

Your generosity has helped the little ones not to lose out on their education even during this crisis! Thank you for your support!

We look forward to keeping you updated on the progress of these centres.
