To all Friends & Supporters of The Chelly Foundation:
Through GlobalGiving and the donations of many friends and supporters, The Chelly Foundation Our has supported giving scholarships to t25 young people (including 22 women) from very poor families rural Chum Kiri district, located about three hours southwest of Phnom Penh. The full or partial scholarships have been for students attending four-year universities in Phnom Penh, including the University of Cambodia and the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Two of our Chelly Scholars graduated in 2019, and four more are expected to graduate this year. The subjects our students have chosen to major in include chemistry, mathematics, finance & banking, economic development, accounting, hotel & tourism, and teaching. We are proud of everyone!
One of the ways in which students are preparing for their future is to take part-time jobs while in school. Doing so provides valuable skills that help them in obtaining good paying, post-college jobs. The salaries made also help support their families back in their home villages in Chum Kiri District. It is extremely gratifying to know that our students have been able to obtain employment in a variety of office settings, representing accounting firms and banks. One of our students has decided to take a full-time job as a teacher of math to 5th graders, while continuing her studies at night. See the pictures of a few of our scholars accompanying this writeup.
If not for the donations received by The Chelly Foundation, the young women pictured here would most likely have gone on after high school to doing labor-intensive work on their families' rice farms back in Chum Kiri, and/or would likely have been seeking temporary work in clothes factories, travelling in the back of open-air, crowded trucks to work each day.
On behalf of all of us at The Chelly Foundation, thank you for your past donations and continuing support. We are absolutely making a tremendous difference in the lives of these young women and their families. Please do consider continuing to support our mission through a small one time or monthly donation to GlobalGiving. A year in school costs $500 per student on average; but even a small gift of $25 or $50 will help buy books for Chelly Scholars and will otherwise contribute to their living expenses while in Phnom Penh. A little bit goes a long way in Cambodia!
Thank you.
