Impact Amidst Increasing Challenges

"What Did You Do To My Mother? I Want To Join Too!"

said John, the 16 year old son of our addicion-recovering Client Margaret, to our Recovery Coach Patience during her home-visit. "For as long as I remember my mother smells of alcohol and is drunk, but now she is sober - and such a different person! What did you do to her? I want to learn too!"

Children as Casualties and Addiction Inheritors

Many of our Clients, especially women and girls, have children who grow up when living with their mothers or parents in the drinking dens and broken homes. They often witness unspeakable violence and abuse of all sorts, despite sometimes their mothers trying their best. Many of them are also introduced to alcohol, drugs and sex and the sale of these at a very young age. Several of them can be found sniffing a bottle of glue at all times.
These children and youths start their lives in the most traumatised ways.
Very little if anything is done to address this problem, despite its magnitude and fast growth.

KAP efforts to heal the surrounding community

KAP's community-based addiction treatment includes training/treatment sessions for the Clients but also tries to pay attention to their families, friends and 'important others'. We do so in order to create conducive healing environments, but also as healing and prevention opportunities for the latter.
Examples of activities are our Family Days, Addiction Psycho-Education Sessions and PET (Participatory Educational Theatre) performances.
Thus John is invited to all of these, for him to learn, to heal and to connect, and to help him escape the vicious addiction trap. Whereas we feel there is much more to be done, at least we are happy to have made a start.

Impact

During our last Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the 21st February 2025, we took stock of our achievements and challenges. We used our SPSS-based data to do so. For our Steps Clients (i.e. those attending our community-based addiction-treatment courses), the picture presented was as follows:
