Dear Friends of the WomenLead Institute at Counterpart International,
I am excited to update you on our ongoing campaign to raise COVID-19 relief funds for women-led organizations around the globe. Your generous donations have provided communities with opportunities to generate income, support rural populations, and aid grassroots organizations. Below are just a few stories of how you have made an impact.
Indonesia: With its COVID-19 relief funds, Trubus Bina Swadaya launched a farming activity for 15 families with disabilities. The project consisted of four major initiatives: 1) Organic farming training, 2) Providing pigs for pig farming, and 3) Providing seeds for beans, carrots, mustard greens, etc.; and 4) a Socio-economic assistance program.
Nigeria: Morgan Smart Development Foundation is an NGO dedicated to the economic empowerment of poor women and youth. Since 2012, the organization has awarded secondary school scholarships to 173 qualified students from financially challenged backgrounds. When COVID-19 struck, the foundation faced financial difficulties from suspended contracts, lack of grant opportunities, and drastic reductions in private donations. At the time, the foundation had 71 students whose educational needs (uniforms, bags, textbooks, supplies, etc.) could not be fully met, meaning the students would not be able to return to class in 2021. The relief funds allowed the foundation to purchase all the needed supplies, enabling the students to return to the new school session.
Papua New Guinea: Porebada Women in Agriculture is a network established by Advancing Papua New Guinea: Women Leaders Network (APNG: WLN) member Lucy Igo. Lucy’s network promotes self-sustaining agricultural practices throughout Papua New Guinea and resorts to craft making during the region’s long dry seasons. COVID-19 restrictions affected the market for handmade artwork and jewelry, so Lucy’s network was forced to find other means to generate income. The donations from GlobalGiving provided the women with an opportunity to purchase sewing machines and produce fabric masks. They received orders from various organizations, including the Department of Community Development, and were able to produce and sell over 300 masks. The money the network was able to generate will allow members to purchase seeds for the upcoming wet season.
Thank you again for your generous donation. We will continue to support women-led organizations around the globe as funds become available and look forward to sharing more stories with you.
Regards,
Carly Smith
