PeaceJam UK were due to hold its annual youth leadership conference for 300 Primary School and Secondary School students at the University of Winchester, Saturday 14 March with The Rt Hon Stuart Lawrence, younger brother of Stephen Lawrence. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus, the University of Winchester cancelled all external events, including the PeaceJam Slam. We are working with the University and our other stakeholders to reschedule the event for Saturday 3 October. The conference programme will stay the same including the keynote speaker and activities delivered.
Stephen Lawrence was a black British teenager from Woolwich, South-East London, who was murdered in a racially motivated attack while waiting for a bus in Well Hall, Eltham on the evening of 22 April 1993. This tragic event had a compounding effect on Stuart's life. Since then, Stuart has had a varied career and is currently a trustee at the Stuart Lawrence Charitable Trust, where he helps promote Stephen Lawrence Day on 22 April, which focuses on inspiring young people to make positive change. In alignment with PeaceJam’s use of role models in education, students attending the PeaceJam conference will have the opportunity to hear Stuart’s personal thoughts about his brother’s death, its impact on British society and how to overcome challenging situations in adverse conditions.
During the conference, students will also spend time devising a social change project that tackles the root cause of an issue in their community, as part of PeaceJam’s One Billion Acts of Peace campaign. The campaign is an important part of the PeaceJam programme, empowering young people to take action and create youth-led community-enhancing projects.
The Coronavirus is straining communities, particularly those with high levels of deprivation, creating multiple socio-economic challenges for young people. Now more than ever, young people require our support in helping them overcome these challenges. Thank you so much for supporting PeaceJam UK’s project to create more young leaders, it makes a big difference to the work we do with young people. We look forward to sharing more updates with you about the youth leadership conference and our other activities.
