Planning is underway for the youth leadership conference with Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams, taking place 9-10 March 2019 at the University of Winchester. To help prepare schools, University students and the wider community, PeaceJam UK recently screened PeaceJam's latest documentary as part of the Nobel Legacy film series, 'Contagious Courage' which tells the story about Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams.
The event was a great way to recruit University students to become mentors at the youth leadership conference, and inspired them to take part in PeaceJam's 1 Billion Acts of Peace campaign. This will be the first time that a group of University students in the UK are planning a social change project, and they have received training to help develop their leadership skills and guide them through the planning stages of a campaign.
One of the University students involved, was a former participant of the PeaceJam programme in her secondary school, and attended the 2017 youth leadership conference with Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee. When asked about the impact PeaceJam has had on her, and why she wants to continue her involvement in the programme, the student replied;
“Meeting Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee taught me that there will always be obstacles, but that everyone has the strength to overcome the problems we face and learn from them to become better leaders. I now hope to pass on what I’ve learnt as a leader to other young people, as a mentor for PeaceJam.”
Thanks to donors like you, PeaceJam UK has been able to expand our work with young people. We are expecting more youth groups and secondary schools from deprived areas in the UK to attend our next youth leadership conference in March. This pioneering event will provide 300 young people with the unique opportunity to meet and learn from an inspirational role model, committed to the leadership development of young people. Thank you for joining us and our 14 Nobel Peace Prize winners in creating young leaders.
