As the world evolves and technology gradually takes over, camping is becoming one of the last bastions that brings people, especially young people, together in person. Nearly every aspect of our lives is now influenced by technology—schools are held online, shopping is done with machines, and young people spend countless hours on their phones. Families living under the same roof no longer engage in meaningful conversations, and children often consider their tablets and phones as their primary playmates. While these technological advancements contribute to speed and efficiency, they also risk creating a disconnect within the human race, leading to a form of brain drain and a loss of interpersonal connections. Despite the many advantages of technology, it is crucial to recognize that human connection should surpass all else.
During the period under review, Camp for Peace Liberia utilized the camping model of learning to demonstrate the power of human connection in making a valuable impact on education and personal development. Through skills development, our participants and camp students were engaged in activities that emphasized teamwork, leadership, environmental awareness, and survival skills within their respective vocations. We also implemented community-building strategies designed to foster a sense of unity and cooperation among campers. These strategies included group activities, team-building exercises, and shared responsibilities, all of which contributed to a strong sense of community.
A particularly significant aspect of our program was environmental stewardship, which we leveraged to promote respect for nature and encourage environmental conservation. These principles were seamlessly integrated into the camp’s learning activities, providing participants with a holistic education that goes beyond traditional classroom settings.
One participant shared, "I feel very good knowing the importance of nature. It brings an extra sense of appreciation to me. I hope that after this program, I will build my own reserve in the forest where I can go to release my stress. Thanks to Camp for Peace Liberia for incorporating these camping activities into our learning."
At Camp for Peace Liberia, camping is more than just an activity, it’s our brand and our motto. We believe that if camping can be harnessed to change the world, Camp for Peace Liberia will lead the way in education and empowerment through camping. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners and campers for their support and participation.
