In a world grappling with unprecedented challenges—ranging from war and political uncertainty to natural calamities, climate change, and the rapid paradigm shift in technology and scientific advancement—camping has proven to be a unique and essential solution. The essence of camping transcends the distractions of modern life; it fosters genuine human connections, nurtures our relationship with nature, and encourages sustainable practices.
At camp, people interact face-to-face, free from the barriers of technology and digital engagements. They walk and talk together, embark on adventures, and share experiences in a communal setting. Camping offers a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in nature, learn to protect the environment, and develop innovative ways to live harmoniously with it. If the world embraced camping as a significant industry, it could contribute to global sanity, slow the spread of climate change, and foster unity among diverse cultures.
During the period under review, your humble servant had the honor of participating in the annual board meeting of the International Camping Fellowship (ICF), held in Ancaster, Toronto, Canada, from October 28 to November 1, 2024. This esteemed gathering brought together global leaders in the camping industry to reflect on achievements, challenges, and opportunities.
As part of this engagement, Mr. Learwellie was privileged to join the "Kumbayah" event, a historic celebration that marks the birth of one of the world’s largest camping movements, established over 30 years ago. This experience underscored the transformative power of camping to connect individuals and communities across the globe.
In his capacity as a board member and Africa Representative, he delivered a detailed report on the state of camping in Africa. The presentation highlighted the strides being made to elevate camping across the continent, as well as the challenges and opportunities unique to the region. Particular emphasis was placed on Liberia’s efforts to strengthen its camping industry and promote its value as a tool for youth empowerment, leadership development, and environmental preservation. He shared both the successes and hurdles the camping industry face in making camping a visible and impactful industry in Africa.
As the year draws to a close, Mr. Learwellie along with other executive members of the Liberia Camping Association, plan to conduct visits to various camps across the country. These visits aim to assess ongoing camping activities, provide support where needed, and inspire a renewed commitment to the camping movement. By engaging directly with local camps, itis hope to enhance the quality of camping experiences, promote best practices, and ensure alignment with global standards.
As we continue to advocate for the growth and recognition of the camping industry, we are reminded that its benefits extend far beyond recreation. Camping has the potential to be a unifying force for humanity, a guardian of the natural world, and a catalyst for innovation and sustainability.
