By ONUGO JAMES | USING BEEKEEPING TO DRIVE CLIMATE ACTION
Using nature-based solutions as a dependable tool in the fight against climate change simplifies innovation, creativity and sustainability. Bee conservation through the improved method of natural beekeeping offers real practical solutions to the community through the sustainability lens.
Unfortunately, these critical nature species are being destroyed at an increasing rate through the unsustainable methods of honeybee harvesting by the locals which involve bush burning, and at some point, cutting down of trees which often serve as hives for the bees.
Rural Watch Africa Initiative through its beekeeping program using improved means, is reaching out to communities and groups sensitizing them on dangers associated with the current unsustainable traditional way of honeybee harvesting, training, and empowering both women and youth to embrace the natural way and become self-reliant.
Through this process, many trees are conserved while new ones are planted, which are essential for bebeectivities, food production increased through enhanced pollination while strengthening the landscape as well as providing jobs and income for the poor unemployed. These communities are gradually becoming a hub for honeybee production both for local and export markets.
It is bringing prosperity into harmony with nature using beekeeping, with its enormous potentials, standing out as a key nature-based solution to climate change.
We are Impressed to see over 150 young Nigerians trained and 25 empowered so far, to become agro-entrepreneurs from the Rural Watch Africa Initiative Sustainable Bio-Beekeeping project, using it as a tool to reduce restiveness, unemployment among youth, and enhanced climate action
They are planting more trees which are critical raw materials for bees' activities.
They are equally strengthening local food systems by increasing numbers of bees, soil health, and preserving biodiversity.
