Since hitting Bangladesh six months ago, the people of Bangladesh are struggling to recover from Cyclone Fani’s destruction. At least 53,000 acres of farm land and 13,000 homes, schools, and other buildings were damaged or destroyed across the country. Many families lost their fishing boats and equipment in the cyclone, and since many families are dependent on fishing, it’s been hard to make ends meet.
Thanks to your rapid response donation, ActionAid has supported at least 25,000 people in the path of the cyclone. We follow the lead of directly impacted communities. In conversation, interviews, and data gathering, families impacted by the cyclone asked for support to go to repairing homes. AAB has supported some of the most vulnerable sponsored families in wholly or partially rebuilding their homes.
All along the way, we supported women in each town to lead the management of the project with their community. Around the world, women are so often first responders in their communities. At ActionAid, we support women in their leadership throughout the disaster response and recovery process. As a part of their work, these women leaders arranged a workshop with local government representatives in order to share their lessons and experiences, and to advocate for strong disaster response infrastructure from the government in the future.
With your help, we’ve been able to make a huge difference for Bangladeshi people affected by Cyclone Fani, like Maria. Maria’s family lost everything in the cyclone and were left homeless. But thanks to your help, Maria and her family now have a place to call home again, and feel safe knowing they have what they need to weather any storm.
Did you know that you can create a fundraiser on GlobalGiving for this project? We need your help to continue to support local Bangladeshi leaders to respond to the damage of Cyclone Fani. Invite your family and friends to give today.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
