Nzeve continues its commitment to reshaping opportunities for deaf individuals in Manicaland. This initiative aims to empower them through targeted professional development, mentorship, and job placements. Central to Nzeve's mission is the belief that deaf individuals bring unique perspectives and skills that can greatly benefit their communities. Apart from that, Nzeve recognizes that we cannot talk about advocacy without including persons with disabilities to represent themselves.
Last month, Nzeve expanded its efforts by training deaf mentors on how to conduct visits to mothers who may be in denial about their children’s deafness. This training aimed to empower mentors to support and guide parents of deaf children in accepting and nurturing their deaf children while enhancing the employability of our mentors. This training emphasizes the necessary guidelines to follow, ensuring that these mentors can effectively communicate the importance of early identification and intervention. The goal is to help mothers embrace their deaf children, fostering a supportive environment for their development. The deaf mentors will also reflect to these parents of deaf children that, given the right opportunities, deaf children can also be in positions where they lead.
Soon after the training, one of the deaf mentors had this to say: “Being part of this training has not only empowered me to support parents embrace their deaf children but has also given me the feeling that our skills and experiences as deaf individuals are valuable in the workplace."
Nzeve's initiative not only showcases the talents of deaf professionals but also emphasizes the fundamental rights of individuals with disabilities, including those who are deaf, to pursue fulfilling employment and leadership roles. By addressing prevailing stereotypes and amplifying the voices of the deaf community, Nzeve is ensuring a more inclusive and fair environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and realize their full potential.
