WINGS' 2019 CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING RECAP

By Dr. Michelle Dubon | Medical Director

WINGS 2019 Cervical Cancer Screening Results
WINGS 2019 Cervical Cancer Screening Results

WINGS has provided 64,714 cervical cancer screenings since 2001. In 2019, we saw an 85% increase in our cervical cancer screening service from 2018This result possible because of a handful of busy clinic days with agricultural plantations and the fact that overall, WINGS provided more contraceptive methods, meaning that we simply saw more women than the previous year. Additionally, one of our surgeons was incredibly successful at convincing women for whom she was providing a tubal ligation to have a screening at the same time. Because WINGS is now reaching into previously unserved departments in the Western Highland of Guatemala, we see even more first-time cervical cancer screening patients. Over a quarter of our screenings were for women who had never been screened before.

WINGS offers cervical cancer screenings in all our clinics, either within our stationary clinics or our mobile unit clinics. We use visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) for immediate detection of cervical cell abnormalities and same-day treatment using cryotherapy for pre-cancerous cells that may lead to cervical cancer.

In 2020, we aim to provide 4,000 VIA screenings, knowing that many of those screenings will happen in the most rural, hard-to-reach areas of the country. Your support means that we are able to offer this service that we know saves lives. On behalf of our medical providers and the women we serve, thank you!
