Digital Education, Clean Water and Solar Report

By Alfred Muheria Aswan | Project Liaison

Greetings St Martins School,

We hope you are doing well and that the last few months since our last report have been as expected.

Here at school, all is well. We just closed for the long holidays in November and December.

In the months since we introduced the hybrid inverter for our solar pumping system, all has been well, though we are still reliant on the grid to pump water for the school. An analysis of the pump patterns indicates that we can only use solar for 6 hours a day when the sun is bright, and then the rest of the day, we have to rely on the national grid, which is still very costly.

The school has a 108,000 liters capacity tank that requires at least 15-18 hrs for it to be full, the assumption here is there is no outflow which is not possible because we have 1000 plus students in the school and also we do have staff who live within the school. The pump has to run all through for us to be able to meet the water needs of the school

The recommendation we have thus far is to improve and maximize the sun by introducing Solar panels that are bigger, better, and more efficient that can tap on the available sun and use it to pump water for as long as they can during the day and reduce the amount of time we pump water using the grid. We already have consulted widely and have been provided with the quotes for the same we are in the process of fundraising to help us achieve this.

The new computer lab installed this year has been a great addition to our school and the students plus their teachers. Learning has been smooth and exciting and this has greatly improved our overall school performance in the subjects being done by our students. We are keen on introducing more digital-based learning and skills in the next school year to have the children skilled in different areas that are beneficial to their learning and growth.

Overall we have had a good year despite the few challenges here and there and we are hoping to have them resolved over time with the support we have and continue to receive from you all.

Feel appreciated and we look forward to sending more updates over time, Thank you.

Alfred Aswan.
