Distribution of family planning to 300 rural women

Following support from donors here on GlobalGiving we raised a total of $265. This amount was way below our budget but way above our expectations in terms of what it enabled us to do.

We were able to travel to 2 deeply rural communities where we conducted 4 contraception public talks in Rachuonyo North Sub county, Homabay County Kenya. In total 786 women and girls of Reproductive age attended these sessions and were enlightened on available contraception methods, and their advantages.

Most of these women were hearing of the contraception methods for the first time. Many had visible child-bearing burden after having more than 6 deliveries and still within the child bearing age bracket. Due to resource limitations we could not respond fully to the requests for contraceptives. 

During the four sessions we however managed to offer 120 first injections of DeoxyMedroxyProgesterone Acetate. This is a three months contraceptive injection which was requested by 571 women. The process involved assessment and screening for suitability before one is injected. We had two volunteer nurses and a Doctor who checked for hypertension, pregnancy among other things.

We ran out of stock and had to turn down others. For us to continue this worthy course we still need more support to buy contraceptives and facilitate the process of screening and distribution. This removes the child bearing burden and eliminates the risk of death from illegal abortion attempts in the hands of quacks and herbalists who are many here and even perform as midwives conducting deliveries.

We intend to increase coverage and consistently supply the information, medications and devices for contraception including condoms.
