“Please come pick up the walker, because Angel does not need it anymore”, said his mother Sofia to the community health worker Nurys last month. It was only a year ago that Angel received the walker through the cooperation with the Creighton University Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy students and faculty that have been working with our organization evaluating the children in our Community Inclusion program each year for the past 20 years! They also bring aids like wheelchairs, walkers and splints and take an afternoon to fit them for the children they have an appropriate aid for.
Angel has a shunt placed because his head cannot drain its liquid by its self and is generally delayed in his development! He was 6 and a half when the family enrolled in the program and he got the walker about a month later and now a year later he walks by himself, holds his bottle, can pay enough attention to play interactively and is learning to be more obedient. Because Angel has also a mild form of autism it is hard for him to eat anything solid. His mother is working hard to change this slowly.
As Angel is now walking by himself, his mother is now teaching him not to touch things, which now became the next challenge in the home! During the home visits he sits on her lap or is engaged in an activity, otherwise he would be walking about, and when possible outside, which is still safe as there is very little traffic on the narrow dirt alley where they live in a semi rural setting and all the neighbors know him!
Grateful for the assistance of Nurys and the big strides in Angel's development, Angel's mother pays close attention during the weekly visits so she understands exactly how to stimulate her son during the coming week in learning a new skill and becoming a little bit more independent.
Our work with children like Angel has been able to continue in 2018 because of your donations!
We appreciate you have chosen our project to support!
In 2019 we will continue to work with at least 100 children with developmental delays in 2019, and thank you for making this possible!!
