Sometimes a lack of funding means we dont have much progress to report - for us the ability to provide children with school uniforms is one that gives us the chance to be part of providing a child with dignity, and an ability to stay in school and focus on what is important... EDUCATION. After all - as Tata Madiba said " “Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.” He also said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
We believe our school uniform projects allows us to support children in getting an education, and growing to spread their wings and chance the world. If you can consider sponsoring a Uniform for a child, please click through to our donation page and do so.
In the meantime - our education continues, in our outreach school as well as at the Nourish library and aftercare center. A focus recently has not only been environmental education, but also learning about health, hygeiene and their bodies; learning to respect it and take care of it.
Thank you as always to our donors who make this project possible!

The importance of school uniforms

Game drive time - in my 'smart' clothes
Many of the children we work with come from Sigagule village - a rural village bordering Kruger National Park. People walk to the village tap for access to water, people cook over an open fire using firewood, they have their own pit toilets... its basic and simple. Many children live with just a mother or even a granny--- this means that life can be tough, life can be the daily struggle to walk to fetch water, walk to fetch firewood, walk to school. The low salaries get spent on the basics - maize porridge tea, beans... For many of these families - spending R 400 on a school uniform is not always possible.
A school uniform is a luxury - but once they have one there is an amazing sense of pride, of ownership, of belonging. For many children this school uniform might even be the smartest thing they own, that is not too small or torn. School uniforms ensure the children can feel they belong- they dont compare clothes to each other, their uniforms give them solidarity. Its a small thing that many of us have never had to think about....
But looking at this photo of children on a field trip ( where no dress code was specified to their parents) all the children chose to wear their school uniform. to look smart for their game drive and field trip. It makes you realise what a difference your donation towards uniforms can do to someones self esteem and opportunities!

Littlies who will "graduate" from pre-school soon!
Due to a lack of donors for our SCHOOL UNIFORM project this last few weeks/months, we havent been able to distribute any new uniforms. But as ever we are hopeful that we will get support coming in. School uniforms are compulsory for children throughout South Africa, even in rural villages and poor communities. This means that often families, who can scare afford it, have to spend their small amount of income buying a school uniform in order to afford their child a privelege perhaps they didnt have... that of getting and EDUCATION.
Your support in buying school uniforms is primarily aimed at low income families, and especially on children finishing pre-school, who, without a school uniform are not allowed to register for Grade 1 in school. your support for this project could truly mean the world to these children, and give them one of the biggest headstarts we can offer someone in life, the chance to receieve an education, the chance to make life better for yourself.
Thank you to the special donors who have supported and i encourage you to spread the word to friends and family to dig deep!
