Update on Relief Efforts Following the M7.6 Earthquake in Noto Peninsula
On New Year's Day of 2024, a powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake shook the Noto Peninsula. Our team promptly geared up and by January 4, we were on the ground, diving straight into the emergency response phase of our mission.
Initial Response and Aid Distribution
Our first days were focused on distributing critical supplies such as water, food, hygiene items, blankets, generators, and fuel. The necessity for immediate action was clear from our interactions with the survivors, one of whom shared, "We don’t have anything. We need everything." Such statements drove home the urgency with which we needed to act, especially when told about the imminent shortages of water and fuel for over 100 residents in one of the facilities.
Targeted Relief Operations
We concentrated our efforts on supporting care facilities and voluntary evacuation centers, which often lack adequate government aid. Our approach was hands-on, with our team making on-the-ground assessments through face-to-face conversations. This direct engagement not only helped us meet the immediate needs but also strengthened our connection with the community.
Moving Towards Recovery
As the situation began to stabilize, our focus shifted towards the early recovery phase. Despite this shift, in the more remote and heavily affected parts of the peninsula, our support with necessary supplies continued. We also started reaching out and assisting those in the early stages of recovery in areas with less damage.
Sustained Efforts and Community Support
As we helped with cleanup efforts, especially aiding elderly residents facing the daunting task of debris removal, we worked closely with local organizations to ensure homes remained livable. Our team also organized psychosocial support activities and provided training for volunteer counselors, led by our on-site clinical psychologist.
Current Status and Looking Ahead
Our commitment in Noto is unwavering. As the summer heat approaches and some areas still face water supply issues, we anticipate a growing need for water distribution. We are here to stay, continuing our support and adapting to the needs as they evolve.
Heartfelt Thanks
