A Parent's Joy

By Lizza Marie Kawooya | Fundraising and Partnership Manager

It is our second academic term already and we can’t believe it. With an addition of 4 young learners to the school, our hearts are filled with gratitude. The new learners continue to confirm to us that our lab school’s approach is appreciated by the community and is positively impactful on the little ones’ lives.

On a sunny afternoon of 13th July, 2022, we held the second parent’s day. In attendance, were 17 parents and 10 enjuba staff. One could say, this parents’ day was not like the first. We not only had parents in attendance but also one of our learners called Rosenblatti, who could not hide his excitement to be part of the meeting.

The meeting kicked off with a prayer from the school Principal, Mrs. Flavia Kizito and introductions from the enjuba team. She went ahead to thank the parents for choosing and supporting enjuba’s vision to build a world of responsible citizens, authentic leaders and credible change agents.

As the meeting commenced, the parents introduced themselves. We couldn’t help but notice how joyous they were. Mrs. Flavia Kizito then opened the floor for experiences and feedback from the parents. This session was spiced up by Rosenblatti together with his class teacher, Miss. Leticia Kezabu as they sang the National anthem and shared the colours of the Ugandan flag. The parents’ faces lit up with huge smiles as they watched in awe the 3 year old sing and speak with a lot of enthusiasm. With such an amazing session starter, the parents went on to share their personal experiences and feedback. A mother to one of the learners called Deborah mentioned how grateful she was for the curriculum. She went ahead to share that her daughter teaches her what they learn in class from how they write letters to a favourite song in class and how one should hold a pencil. “I was very impressed,” she said.

As Deborah’s mother concluded her feedback, another parent raised up her hand to share her experience with her son. This parent was one of those whose who had a child join the lab school this current term. She shared that on her 3 year-old’s first day at school, he explained to her what a sunrise and sunset meant and in that moment, she knew that the lab school was the right place for him to realise his very best version as a child.

Deborah’s and Jason’s mothers were not the only parents that shared their experiences on that day. We continued to receive more impact stories from other parents and listening to them fuelled our hunger to reach more children with our approach. We believe that with our lab school system and curriculum, children will develop executive function skills, parents will be much more involved in their children’s education and will enable children develop holistically. We plan to replicate this model and build ECD centers at rural public schools to create access to the 60% of children ages 3 - 5 in Uganda who do not have it.

And that’s why we kindly ask you to please support our ECD program by donating  $50 a month to support a child’s school fees for a month, or by supporting any of the ECD co-curricular activities including; music, coding and chess.

Thank you for your continued support!
