By JUAN JOSE CONSEJO | DIRECTOR
We know that in order to achieve our goal of regenerating the social and natural fabric of Oaxaca, it is important to establish networks that strengthen our vision and mission for the environment and Mother Nature, thus recovering a conscious relationship with the resources they provide us.
That is why, in collaboration with 28 community, civil society, and academic organizations, we have launched what we call "The Citizen and Community Observatory of Water and the Environment," acronym OCCAMA, of which we are founders. This organization was named so that it would have eyes that carefully examine what is happening with water, nature, and our relationship with them; ears, so that we could listen to people, providing a space for complaints and proposals; and a voice for conversation and agreement among all stakeholders, while respecting Oaxacan traditions. We also want the Observatory to have hands that collaborate in building tools to protect people and their environment, and a heart that will provide the strength necessary to heal the relationship we have with Mother Earth and thus heal ourselves.
Through this space, we have been able to highlight several actions that result in environmental risks, such as the Paso Ancho dam project, a proposal formulated by the state government in response to the water crisis. However, we know that any water project must have a solid hydrological, ecological, and social justification, as well as rigorous adherence to and respect for agrarian, environmental, and indigenous rights. Therefore, through the OCCAMA, we have requested the corresponding information and held broad discussions with the public about water supply options for the city. As you can see, we not only carry out concrete regeneration actions in places like El Pedregal and La Mesita, but we also address key issues related to public policy.
This is an example of what INSO seeks to achieve in collaboration with other entities concerned with human safety and respect for nature. We therefore appreciate your support, as it has helped facilitate our work.
