Since the end of 2022, the downward trend of coronavirus cases in Ecuador has been sustained. Our Early Childhood services have fully resumed their presence, we are attending 200 children and their parents, and our children's center Ojos de Cielo has reestablished its extended hours (from 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).
Already in the middle of this school year, we are beginning to see the first fruits of our educational work: the children have begun to develop their skills and abilities, either through the daily routine (in our children's center Ojos de Cielo) or with the pedagogical practices that their parents learn in the PelCa workshops; 96% of the children have begun to improve their nutritional habits and 20 children with malnutrition are being followed up periodically. With the guidance of the educators-through daily dialogues in the children's center or home visits-97% of the parents have improved their hygiene habits at home. But one of our most important changes in post-pandemia is that the children, by entering into relationships with others, recover and improve their capacity for socialization and bonding.
Eithan (3 years old) joined PelCa in 2021 with his parents; in 2022, they asked for him to join Ojos de Cielo because their jobs had changed back to full time. The child had a hard time sharing, he would hit and bite, did not know how to use the cutlery, watered all the food, did not eat the salads... Through the activities proposed by the educator and the daily routine, his behavior was changing and thanks to the dialogue with his parents, they became more aware of how to educate their son. His father takes him to the center every day. He is a kind, responsible man, open to the educator's suggestions (different from most men in these communities) who wants to do what is best for his children:
"When Eithan entered the center it was chaos because he is a very restless child. Little by little, with the help of teacher Lupe, he became calmer and more obedient. We parents have to be attentive, come to the center, ask questions, that is our role: to be concerned about our children. If I had another child, without a doubt, I would send him back to Sembrar". (Eithan's father)
