By Lou Billett | Chairperson and Founder, African Angels
It is the beginning of the 2023 school year in South Africa, and we are delighted to announce that Kungawo has been accepted into the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg for her high school education. Kungawo is our 4th African Angel graduate to successfully compete with over 6 000 girls in South Africa, for just 66 bursary (scholarship) places. We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity and the generosity of Ms Winfrey, levelling the playing fields for girls in our country. We are proud of our role in helping Kungawo achieve her full potential in primary school, and just as proud of the supportive and nurturing role her parents played.
In South Africa only 41% of children who start school in Grade 1 will finish high school.
In 2022, 8/10(80%) of our first graduating primary school class finished high school, with the 9th person finishing in 2023. This is a huge achievement for the learners, many of whom faced personal challenges throughout their high school careers.
None of our work would be possible without your support, in time, money and sharing our social media posts. We celebrate your generosity creating justice for our learners and their families.
Thank you!
Lou
