For many children in Kenya, Wednesday 30th December is a very important date. This is the date that the KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) results are announced. These exams are sat at the end of eight years of primary education and determine which secondary schools offer students a place.

Thanks to our afterschool tuition programmes, supported through GlobalGiving, there are a lot of children who will be scoring higher marks this year. Through the programmes, they have had access to textbooks that are in short supply in many non-government schools in slum areas. They have also had dedicated volunteer teachers on hand to answer their questions, set additional studies and mentor and encourage them. In  the last few weeks I have taken visitors to these projects and we have sat with some of the students and heard first hand what a difference these centres make. Students gain confidence and are encouraged to pursue their dreams. They told us that the support they have been given has helped them pull up their grades in school and they are looking forward to getting their results.

At the other end of the scale, we have seen graduation ceremonies at some of our ECD (Early Childhood Development) centres. There are three stages to this pre-school education - baby class, nursery and pre-unit. In KiMMta Academy in Kibera, 24 students completed their pre-unit class and a graduation ceremony was held to celebrate their move into primary education in January. Many of these are the original students who started in the school when it opened so it was a great day and a very proud one for KiMMta Chairman, Vincent Kegode.

We thank everyone who has supported our education programmes through GlobalGiving in 2015.

We wish you a Happy New Year and look forward to changing more lives together in 2016!
