We are now in the second term of this academic year and Kibera Mpira Mtaani library which is based in Kibera slums has a total of 356 students attending on a daily basis when schools are in session but the numbers increased to 480 during the recent holidays when the secondary students in boarding schools returned home and used the facility to do their homework and compare study notes with their peers from other schools. The number of students who attend Village of Hope After School Library is 50 when schools are in session and 70 over the school holidays while the Mobile Library serves up to 150 students per school visit.

Apart from the Afterschool Programme, Vision Africa has continued to advocate for quality education through Early Years Education Programme. This provides the young children with a strong foundation for their primary education by developing social, language and numeracy skills through Early Childhood Development Centres which are established in partnership with project partners across the Kenya. The number of children enrolled each year to join baby class across all the 4 centres has increased significantly due to good performance, provision of learning materials and uniforms as well as feeding programmes.

During a visit to one of the projects in the Western region of the country, we met parents who could not hide their joy after their children received full school uniform thanks to one of Vision Africa’s supporters. The children looked radiant in their new uniforms and to our surprise we met young parents who had enrolled their children the ECD having attended the primary school themselves.

Vivian is one of the Alumni from Nyamwanga Primary who enrolled her three year old son at Nyamwanga ECD centre the beginning of the year. She had this to say about Vision Africa.

“I am humbled because today my son is a beneficiary of Vision Africa just like I was 10 years ago. Before Vision Africa came to support this school, many of us students had tattered school uniforms, walked barefooted and had to either carry lunch or remain hungry. But since the time Vision Africa came to this place, everything changed and even the school performance improved.I decided to bring my son here because I know the school has the support of Vision Africa and our children will have quality education. I would like to thank Vision Africa and all those who support them for giving our children full school uniform, text books and good meals so that they can enjoy learning. May God bless the good work you have been doing to give a child a future.”

We also spoke to a grandmother who is taking care of her three grandchildren after their parents passed on and she said. “My grandchildren never came to school with uniform because I am too old to work and I cannot afford this luxury since I depend on other people to cater for our needs though I want them to get education. Today I am the happiest person because my grandchildren have school uniform and they get for breakfast and food at lunch time. I only have to look for what they can eat in the evening. Let me say a big thank you to Vision Africa and all the sponsors who are supporting this school. I do not know what I would have done without your support God bless you immensely”
