Dear Friends and Partners of Fugee School,
We want to thank you for your support which made it possible for us to keep our school running and to continue providing Fugee students with the most effective programmes.
Your donation is helping us with equipping Fugee students with the right academic, creative and life skills in an environment free from discrimination and exclusion. We continue developing and implementing programmes under our four main pillars: education, emotional health, grit and aftercare. During the last period, besides providing formal primary and secondary education to over 200 refugee children, we have conducted the following activities:
Education Programmes
For some of our students, coping with the classes becomes a real challenge due to their lack of regular access to education in previous years, their learning difficulties due to the traumatic experiences lived, and a limited knowledge of English.
To help students with reaching the level corresponding to their grade, Fugee School has designed and piloted the Bridging the Gap in Education Classes, which offers complementary Phonics classes for Primary students, and Math, English and Science classes for Secondary students. The additional classes for Secondary students are also addressed to get them ready for placement tests in post-secondary studies.
Emotional Health Programmes
Fugee students belong to 9 different nationalities. This workshop helped our students talk about and embrace diversity and inclusivity, work on cultural symbols from their countries and share their work with other students from different nationalities. We believe understanding and acceptance are key values we must cultivate in all children.
Fugee girls from Secondary Education participated in sessions on gender equality and self-esteem. These workshops on gender issues will continue taking place once a month throughout the following period. Many girls come from communities where the female is seen as less worthy, and so creating safe places where girls can express themselves and share their thoughts and challenges, and also talk about solutions and changes allows them to be heard and be valued. Our students are better equipped with the tools and thinking to overcome gender barriers in the classroom and in their communities.
Grit Programmes
Both Fugee Girls FC and Fugee Boys FC played in the Faisal Cup, which is a football and netball tournament to act as a voice of freedom and opportunity for underprivileged children in Malaysia. Both teams got a place in the next phase of the tournament, which will take place in July.
Fugee students from Secondary Education continue their work assisting Primary teachers in their classes. This successful initiative is strengthening Secondary students’ sense of responsibility and dedication, while helping them with acquiring teaching and classroom managemnet skills which can be useful for their future professional life. Our Buddies are also a great inspiration to their peers, showing them that with motivation one can achieve anything.
At Fugee School the child is at the centre of every decision. All academic and non-academic programmes are aimed at teaching students how to teach themselves, and addressing their individual needs. The skills acquired through Fugee School are what they need to cope with challenges they face today and will encounter in the future; training them to be resilient, adaptive and empowered individuals. With your support, Fugee School will be able to guarantee access to innovative learning and care programs for more refugee children and youth In Malaysia.
Thank you!
